What is IUGR?

A medical condition in which unborn baby doesn't grow to normal weight during pregnancy. IUGR stands for intrauterine growth restriction, also known as fetal growth restriction.

What is SGA?

Small for gestational age is a term used to describe a baby who is smaller than the usual amount for the number of weeks of pregnancy. SGA babies usually have birthweights below the 10th percentile for babies of the same gestational age.

What is the difference between IUGR and SGA?

Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) describes a fetus that has not reached its growth potential because of genetic or environmental factors. Small for gestational age (SGA) refers to an infant whose birth weight was below the 10th percentile for the appropriate gestational age.

Facts about IUGR?

1. IUGR is rare, there are 200,000 US cases per year.

2. Treatment can help, but IUGR condition can't be cured.

3. Condition requires a medical diagnosis

4. Lab tests and imaging is often required

What Causes IUGR?

Causes of Intrauterine Growth Restriction. IUGR has many possible causes. A common cause is a problem with the placenta. The placenta is the tissue that joins the mother and fetus, carrying oxygen and nutrients to the baby and permitting the release of waste products from the baby.

What are the different types of IUGR?

There are basically two different types of IUGR: Symmetric or primary IUGR is characterized by all internal organs being reduced in size. Symmetric IUGR accounts for 20% to 25% of all cases of IUGR. Asymmetric or secondary IUGR is characterized by the head and brain being normal in size, but the abdomen is smaller.

IUGR Symptoms

Low birth weight: With IUGR condition, a baby is born weighing less than 90 percent of other babies at the same gestational age.

IUGR Treatment

Mainly involves closely and regularly monitoring of mother and unborn baby. Unborn baby's weight is monitored via ultrasound, depending on results, baby may need to be delivered early. Depending on the specific IUGR condition, certain medication may be prescribed to the mother to manage condition for example IUGR condition due to Gestational Hypertension/Preeclampsia may require blood pressure medication to help manage the condition.

  • Maternal-Fetal medicine specialist: Focuses on medical management of high-risk pregnancies.

  • Neonatologist: Provides medical care for newborn infants.

  • OBGYN Doctor: Focuses on reproductive health in women and childbirth.

Free/Discount Prescription Medication

Easing Other's Pain

One of our goals is to ensure that expectant mothers diagnosed with a IUGR condition needing prescription medication for their specific IUGR condition have their basic medication needs met through this program. For safety and well-being, a Dr. prescription note is required to received this aid. With your generous donations and volunteering efforts, together, we have the capacity to fuel these initiatives of Free or Discount Prescription Medication for IUGR patients.

Fighting For SGA Babies

One of the main reasons Zane & Sydnee's Foundation was founded in 2016 was to partner with IUGR research professionals and directly fund specific IUGR researchers to improve IUGR treatment and to improve certain healthcare guidelines for at-risk groups and expectant mothers. We’ve invested resources to this charitable cause, and hope you’ll help us continue this unique initiative.
